What Is Modafinil?
Modafinil is a psychoactive drug. It acts as a wakefulness-promoting Central Nervous System stimulant (eugeroic) – temporarily altering brain function resulting in greater levels of alertness and wakefulness. Its approved by the FDA to treat Narcolepsy, Shift Work Sleep Disorder and Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The European Medicines Agency has only approved modafinil for treatment of Narcolepsy. Globally modafinil is being used out of context for treatment of sleep related diseases, fatigue and cognitive enhancement.
Modafinil is structurally related to the distinct drugs of adrafinil and armodafinil which also improve wakefulness/alertness. Its structurally unrelated to conventual stimulants such as Ritalin, Cocaine, and Amphetamines and as such the side effects are very different. Modafinil as a stimulant-eugeroic is non-addictive and does not alter your personality.
What is Modafinil?
Doctors all around the world are prescribing Modafinil for life-impacting conditions such as sleep apnea, excessive daytime sleepiness and narcolepsy. Many doctors in the United Kingdom prescribe Modafinil to anyone who is suffering from an ailment causing them to achieve less sleep than normal.
It is reported to perform like a mind stimulant on par with a 12 hour coffee. Citizens of the Nootropics Community frequently describe its influence as a “light productive buzz”. Sluggards transformed into productive worker-bees. Conversely the same groups of people report a phenomenon of “Tunnel Vision”. Whereby under the influence of Modafinil one can over-focus on one small task and lose track of time.
This drug of many names is known in Canada & Ecuador as Alertec. In Australia & New Zealand as Modvigil. In The United Kingdom, US, South Africa as Provigil. And in Germany as Vigil. These are all brand names of one single entity. The term “Modafinil” describes the underlying universal genetic structure of the active ingredient. Here’s a mug shot of the active little fella:
Time to brush the dust off that old chemistry book. Looks like we have a C15H15NO2S. I thought it looked familiar. This compound works by elevating levels of neurotransmitters in the brain particularly Dopamine, Histamine, Norepinephrine, Serotonin and GABA. A mechanism similar to conventional stimulants like Adderal, Cocaine and Coffee. Modafinil however is much milder in effect and has low potential for addiction.
How does modafinil work?
The main way Modafinil works is by increasing levels of dopamine in the brain by blocking dopamine transporter proteins from working. Dopamine transporters move dopamine back into neurones so that it can be re-used during neurotransmission. Since dopamine is highly involved in the reward circuitry of the brain higher levels of dopamine result in a lower threshold for the motivation required to perform a specific task.
Modafinil increases levels of histamine in the brain, particularly the hypothalamus (which is a primal part of the brain which regulates overall mental arousal). Histamine also plays a role in the circadian rhythm of humans – regulating sleep cycles. Higher levels of the neurotransmitter histamine has been linked with greater levels of mental arousal.
Modafinil increases levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which is responsible for creating emotions. Serotonin is linked with positive and happy feelings. Higher levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain may lead to a positive and happy mood and as such may make one feel more able to stay awake or perform a task.
Modafinil prescribed as medicine is dosed orally. One should not exceed 400mg in a 24 hour period. Most dosage units come in sets of 200mg. For prescribed conditions it is advised to take Modafinil once in the morning. Please refer to this NHS Resource for more extensive dosage information.

If you are taking modafinil for cognitive enhancement then start off at 1/4 a pill and work your way up otherwise the effects will be too strong and unpleasant. It is best to dissolve a whole pill in lukewarm water rather than cutting up a pill because some areas of a pill are higher in binder material than in active ingredient. Volumetric dosing is more accurate and should be used for highly sensitive individuals. To do this simply dissolve a whole pill in lukewarm water and take 1/4 of the solution if you want 1/4 (50mg) of a 200mg pill.
In America and the United Kingdom Modafinil is only approved for use with valid prescription. It is possible to purchase modafinil online with great ease. This is because of abundance of grey-markets. It is your own responsibility to know if you are legally permitted to import modafinil without a valid prescription.
